Job Description

Summary

The Baylor College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, Rheumatology is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Research Nurse II to join our clinical research team. This role supports faculty-led studies focused on pediatric autoimmune diseases and requires a strong foundation in clinical care, research protocols, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will be a proactive self-starter who can work independently while receiving mentorship from principal investigators and the research leadership team. 

In addition to standard clinical research duties, the Research Nurse II in the Division of Rheumatology will support a growing portfolio of industry-sponsored treatment trials, particularly in pediatric lupus and other autoimmune conditions. The nurse will assist with protocol development, patient recruitment, and coordination of study visits, while ensuring adherence to regulatory and ethical standards. This role also involves maintaining communication with sponsors, managing study documentation, and contributing to data quality and reporting. Given the collaborative nature of the division, the nurse will work closely with faculty, coordinators, and multidisciplinary teams to support research initiatives and improve patient outcomes.

 

The ideal candidate will have specialized skills in pediatric care, clinical research, and regulatory compliance.

Job Duties

Clinical Research- 60%

  • Delivers high-quality, safe patient care and customer service in compliance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
  • Collaborates with Rheumatology faculty and fellows to recruit, screen, enroll, and evaluate patients that participate in a research study.
  • Administers study medications and educates patients on proper use, adherence, potential adverse effects, and overall study objectives, including procedures and lab tests.
  • Collects study specimens and checks lab results for any abnormalities.
  • Monitors subjects’ progress and advises the Principal Investigator of factors that may lead to discontinuation of the study.

Regulatory- 20%

  • Prepares and develops IRB protocol documents and consent forms to submit in BRAIN.
  • Coordinates and communicates with the Clinical Research Advancement Division and Reliant/Central IRBs on regulatory submission.
  • Ensures all clinical studies comply with FDA regulations and other applicable regulatory standards.
  • Maintains source documentation, study data, and electronic data capture (EDC).
  • Assists with the development of clinical trial agreements as needed.

Administrative- -20%

  • Schedules study visits, leads weekly research meetings, and presents study updates during multidisciplinary rounds to faculty, investigators, and research staff.
  • Maintains research-related supplies by ordering, restocking, and checking for expiration dates.
  • Provides training and guidance to research nurses, other research personnel, and serves as a resource to staff.
  • Demonstrates strong teamwork and communication skills to effectively coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, Principal Investigator, patients, and families.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Two years of relevant experience as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pediatrics experience.
  • Clinical research experience.
  • Regulatory compliance experience.
