The Charleston Horticultural Society (The HORT) is a non-profit organization located in
Charleston, SC and dedicated to preserving and celebrating the region’s unique horticultural
heritage through education, community partnerships and sustainable garden initiatives. For
over 25 years The Hort has equipped garden enthusiasts and horticultural professionals
across the South Carolina Lowcountry to cultivate community, resiliency, and beauty through

About This Position
The Hort is seeking a highly organized, creative and reliable individual to support the day-to-
day administration of the Hort. This full-time position requires a self-starter who is focused on
execution of member communication, marketing, social media and website management.
The Marketing & Communications Manager will report directly to the Executive Director.
There are no direct reports to this position.
Responsibilities
Communications
Write and/or produce all communications, including:
Hort Happenings – e-newsletter to about upcoming events, workshops, lectures and
other gardening related activities in Charleston (weekly)
Hort Alerts - highlighted reminders of upcoming events as needed
The Vine Online – quarterly, online seasonal gardening journal (produce only)
Marketing
Social Media – Design and maintain a content calendar that reflects the full scope of
the Hort’s work including daily creation of posts, videos, reels on various social media
sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Monitor and maintain comment
sections to encourage engagement.
Run data analytics on online communications.
Engage thoughtfully and appropriately with the audience in order to ensure positive
feedback and build a following.

Identify new opportunities to promote the Hort events via local media, business
partners, and other external marketing and gardening organizations.
Website Management
o Maintain the Hort’s website, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of information,
including posting information for all events, plant sales, and blog postings.
o Provide strategic input regarding website information and organization.
Events and Program Support
o Assist with set-up, breakdown and clean-up of events; handle registration and
welcome participants; answer questions, sign up new members, oversee volunteers,
and take photos for social media and marketing related materials. Events include:
Lecture Series - Monday evenings (8 per yr)
Plantasia - Saturday annual event in the Spring
Harvest Jubilee - Saturday annual event in the Fall
Yeamans Hall Luncheon - biannual luncheon in February
Garden Tours - Saturdays Spring and Fall
Gardeners’ Happy Hour - evening events (8 per yr)
Ad Hoc Field Trips
Online Plant Sales (6 per year)
Office & Administration Support
o Answer phones, greet visitors, and assist the Executive Director with the day-to-day
operations of the office.
o Business Hours are Monday - Thursday 9 am to 5 pm. Public Office Hours are 10
am to 4 pm. This position will work remotely on Fridays.
Qualifications - What You Will Bring

Proficiency with Google Workspace Apps and Microsoft Office Apps, Canva, and

Experience with website management, preferably using WIX

What We Offer
Starting salary in the low $50k’s
8 days Paid Time Off (PTO) for vacation, personal or sick leave (starting 60 days after
commencement of employment)
12 paid holidays
Monthly $50 stipend for use of cell phone and other personal equipment
Monthly stipend for discretionary use toward medical coverage beginning in July
